OK so I did it. I accepted my own challenge and took a few minutes today to write and revise a poem with the prompt “coffee and jazz.” This is very rough but this is what I came up with. What do you think? What did you write today?
First Cup
Before the first cleansing breath
I yearn for you
Your smell
The way you caress my tongue–
You infuse me with sunlight
Ignite my morning,
start the syncopated rhythm,
the bass, hum and skat
Behind my eyes.

If you’re free tomorrow and in the area, stop by the Strand Theater between 11 and 6 for the Small PRess Expo. It’s in York PA. It will be awesome. I’m doing a short workshop and a reading. So many great voices will be there. I hope you can make it.

I really like this poem. To me, it’s synonymous with loving a significant other. I can feel the magic of love in those words. The intensity of needing and how enriching ‘coffee’ can be reminds me of how it feels to be in the arms of someone you care for deeply. I love coffee too, but to me those words are full of passion and excitement for life and love. It reminds me of those butterflies that you get at the beginning of a relationship, and if you’re lucky enough those butterflies that occur every day. That feeling of need and want; yearning for one thing and one thing only. His love. His kiss.
